Richland County is saddened by the death of a detainee at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. Detention center staff discovered the detainee non-responsive in his cell at about 7:15 a.m. today during morning meal pass.

The detention center’s on-site medical team immediately responded and, along with Richland County EMS, began life-saving measures to revive the detainee but were unsuccessful. The detainee did not have a cellmate, and an initial observation showed no signs of physical trauma. The detainee was known to have a pre-existing medical condition.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office is investigating.
