A native of Richland County, Councilwoman Yvonne McBride was sworn into office as a Councilmember in January 2017. Her 14-square-mile urban district spans Forest Acres, Arcadia Lakes and Dentsville and includes Providence Hospital and the Columbia Place Mall. As Councilwoman for District 3, McBride’s top priority is maintaining an open-door policy with her constituents to ensure their voices are heard. McBride focuses on economic development, education, public safety and addressing social service needs. She promises to bring transparency and accountability to Council so that residents have a better understanding of how their tax dollars are spent.
McBride brings to Council more than three decades of experience in state government. After serving as director of the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and as an administrator with the S.C. Department of Education, she retired as Safe Schools and Youth Services Director representing the S.C. Department of Education.
McBride attended public schools in Richland County. She received a bachelor’s degree in psychology and education from South Carolina State University and a master’s degree of criminal justice from the University of South Carolina. During her career, she launched innovative educational and juvenile justices programs to address delinquency prevention and community empowerment issues.
