Initiative
- July 9, 2019 – County Council approves first reading of an ordinance that would prevent businesses from distributing single-use plastic bags at checkout
- Aug. 1, 2019 – Council gives second reading to the ordinance and instructs staff to
- conduct an education and feedback campaign
- bring back an ordinance ready for third reading in one year
Task force
- August 2019 – Task force of County staff created to help conduct education and feedback for ordinance and keep Council informed of its progress
- August-September 2019 – Task force begins regular meetings
- November 2019 – Task force identifies 16 stakeholder groups, develops plans for outreach
- Dec. 3, 2019 – Task force chair presents to Council
Surveys
- October-November 2019 – Task force creates two surveys as part of educational outreach for ordinance: one for residents and one for the business community
- Nov. 5-19, 2019 – Surveys go to Council for review
- Dec. 6, 2019-May 2020 – Surveys go out to public for feedback
Public meetings
- March-May 2020 – County staff host public meetings, roundtables around the County (Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, these meetings have been postponed. The County aims to reschedule them for later in 2020.)
Ordinance preparation (for third reading by Council)
- May 1-June 30, 2020 – Task force takes general consensus from surveys and roundtables to prepare a report for Council
