Recycling

On the morning of your scheduled recycling collection day your recycling roll cart must be at the curb by 7:00 AM.

Please remove your cart from the curb by 7:30 PM of your collection day.

What to Recycle

Please see the Recycling Guide below. All recyclables must be placed loosely in the roll cart - Please DO NOT bag your recyclables. Recycling roll carts with items not in compliance, may not be collected.

Note: Soon, every Recycling Roll Cart will include this helpful guide on how-to recycle right at your curbside. If there is something not listed here, try searching the Waste Wizard using the FREE Richland Solid Waste App (available at your favorite app store). Still unsure - When In Doubt... Throw it out in your household garbage.  

How to Recycle

Aluminum/ Metal Cans

Aluminum and Steel (tin) cans used for food, beverages, and pet food. NO Aerosol cans.  Rinse cans to remove food residue. Labels do not need to be removed. 

Plastics

Plastic bottles, jugs, tubs and clamshell thermoform packaging (i.e. salad, berry, bakery containers, etc.) that are marked as Type 1 through 7, are collected ; NO plastic bags or wrap. You may leave the caps on. Plastic Containers that have held hazardous materials such as pesticides, petroleum products and pool chemicals, will NOT be collected. Empty household bleach bottles are acceptable. 

Cardboard, Chipboard, & Cereal Boxes

Corrugated cardboard is accepted for recycling - cut or fold so the cardboard fits into the roll cart. Flatten boxes and place them in your recycling roll cart. Spiral Wound Composite Cans (i.e. canned potato chips, nuts, raisins, coffee, etc.) are accepted for recycling. Wax or plastic coated cardboard is NOT accepted. Chipboard boxes such as cereal boxes must be clean and dry and only have stored dry, non-refrigerated foods. Pizza boxes are recyclable- the pizza is not! So make sure the pizza box is free of ALL food debris (and the extra cheese)

Newspaper, Magazines, Catalogs, & Books

Newspapers including inserts are accepted for recycling. Magazines and catalogs are recyclable as well as unwanted junk mail, including envelopes with plastic windows. Phone books and paper back books are accepted, Hard back books may be recycled if the hard cover is removed. No Shredded Paper. 

Milk and Juice Cartons

Refrigerated (or Gable-Top) Cartons are accepted, please rinse and recycle.  Shelf-Stable (or Aseptic) Cartons cannot be recycled curbside as they have coatings that sometime include additional layers of plastic or aluminum. Examples of each can be found below to help you identify what you have. If you are unsure, please dispose of in your household garbage. 

• Refrigerated cartons are found in refrigerated sections of grocery stores and contain products like milk, juice, cream, and egg substitutes.
• Shelf-stable cartons, as the name might suggest, can be placed on store shelves for an extended period of time and are used mostly for juice, milk, soy milk, soup, broth, and wine stored at room temperature (typically in box form). Please dispose of these containers in your household garbage. 

Know What to Throw!

Materials like broken glass, food debris and bagged items can contaminate valuable recyclable material - Making them unrecoverable.  Please help to keep recyclables free of the following contaminants: 

• NO Plastic Bags, Wraps or Film;
• No Polystyrene (eg. Styrofoam);
• No Disposable Cups or To-Go Containers;
• No Household Garbage or Yard Debris;
• No Food or Liquids;
• No Housewares or Home Decor;
• No Toys or Electronics;
• No Cords, Wires, Hoses, or Rope-Like Items;
• No Carpet or Lumber;
• No Fabric, Clothing or Shoes;
• No Paint or Hazardous Material
• No Shredded Paper

When in doubt, Throw it out. Rather than risk contaminating the recycling stream, Please keep materials that you are unsure about, out of your recycling cart.
