Columbia, SC—Ella Grace Comer, age 10, has been named the State Winner in the SC Association of Conservation Districts’ Conservation Poster Contest in the 2nd-3rd Grade category. Her poster, titled “Dig Deeper! Mysteries in the Soil,” was a response to the National Association of Conservation District’s annual stewardship title and depicted four children examining things they had found in the soil, including fossils, worms, seeds, and bacteria. The poster earned countywide recognition last spring and went on to compete against entries from conservation districts statewide. It will now progress to the national competition.
Like the children depicted on her poster, Comer enjoys searching for treasure in the soil: “You never really know what you’re going to find in the soil—an old license plate, or dinosaur teeth. If you just dig deep enough, you can find lots of stuff!” Now a 4th grader at Brockman Elementary School, Comer also enjoys metal detecting, drawing, and studying science and drama.
The Conservation Poster Contest is an annual competition hosted by conservation districts at the local, state, and national level. Last year’s theme encouraged appreciation for the complexity and importance of healthy soil ecosystems which support life.
The 2015 theme is “Local Heroes: Our Hardworking Pollinators,” and Richland County K-12 students are invited to submit posters created around this theme to the Richland Soil and Water Conservation District for local judging by April 3, 2015. Details, rules, and entry forms are available online at www.rcgov.us/rswcd.
