ABOUT THE DAY OF SERVICE
The USGBC-South Carolina Chapter, AIA South Carolina and Conservation Voters of SC are inviting communities to take action on campuses in South Carolina and around the world for the third annual Green Apple Day of Service, September 27, 2014. On this day, they are encouraging K-12 and college/university students, teachers, and administrators to plan a school sustainability project, and work with community volunteers to create positive environmental change. Together we are also inviting professional members of the green building community to serve as volunteer mentors for each project. Mentors will provide planning support and work with schools to prepare successful events. While the official date is September 27, schools may host a project any time before October 27, 2014.
PROJECTS & PROCESS
Each participating school will identify a low or no cost project that fulfills an unmet environmental need, and submit an application. Schools may propose a wide variety of projects- from planting school gardens, to collaborating on clean-ups, to hosting e-waste recycling drives- or they may customize a project to meet local goals. After the school submits an application, the support team will assist in optional mentor pairing and volunteer recruiting as needed.
While the immediate impact of these service projects may result in energy/water savings, cleaner air, or healthier learning environments; we hope that the Green Apple Day of Service will strengthen relationships between schools and the community. We also hope to create a lasting awareness of the importance of green schools, and catalyze a movement that fosters an attitude among youth and future generations to appreciate and model sustainable practices.
MENTORS/ VOLUNTEERS:
As a mentor you help plan and support a school project providing 3-5 hours of project planning support per month, leading up to the day of service (mentors will be eligible for LEED credential maintenance volunteer hours). A company or organization can sign up to mentor a project. Volunteers help support an event on the day of the project.

SCHOOLS:
