Program Encourages Projects to Benefit the Environment

Councilman Torrey Rush presented a resolution Thursday recognizing the last Saturday in September each year as Green Apple Day of Service in Richland County. The presentation took place during the SC Green Schools Summit at Westwood High School. The Green Apple Day of Service encourages schools to work on environmentally friendly projects. For more information, visit 

Earlier this week Richland County passed a resolution sponsored by Councilwoman Dickerson to recognize the last Saturday of September each year as Green Apple Day of Service.

The Green Apple Day of Service provides inspiration for Richland County parents, teachers, students, companies, and local organizations to transform their school environments into healthier, more cost-effective, and more sustainable places to learn through local service projects. 

Since 2012 participating schools in the midlands have been involved in service projects ranging from creating greenhouses out of recycled plastic bottles, building learning gardens, starting breath better programs, conducting energy audits, and many more.

Projects like this equip students with the tools to take on some of the most pressing sustainability challenges that they will face in their future careers.

All schools in Richland County are challenged to participate in the Green Apple Day of Service on Sept 27^th .  With your help and dedication, together we can transform our schools into healthy, safe, cost-efficient and productive learning places where our children can be inspired to dream of a brighter future.
