Richland County residents could wake up to a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow Saturday morning as an arctic chill settles into the area this weekend.
Rain is expected to move into the area today, with it changing to sleet and snow sometime around daybreak Saturday morning. Less than one inch of snow is possible across Richland County.
“The two big issues will be snow and ice early Saturday, then icy roads and walkways Saturday night and Sunday,” said Ken Aucoin, the County’s Chief Meteorologist.
Skies are expected to clear by Saturday afternoon, with temperatures around freezing most of the day. Temperatures Sunday and Monday will struggle to reach the upper 30s despite bright sunshine. Lows will be in the mid-teens, not far from record levels.
The area’s normal temperatures this time of year are a high of 56 and a low of 34.
The Richland County Emergency Services Department and Public Works Department are monitoring weather conditions and encourage residents to travel with extreme caution this weekend as sleet and black ice can make roadways hazardous. Homeowners and businesses owners are reminded to make sure water sprinkler systems are turned off. Automatic watering systems contribute to icy walkways and roadways when they operate during freezing temperatures.
“Residents are urged to stay home and limit unnecessary travel,” said Mike Kalec, Richland County Emergency Manager. “We ask that you check on your elderly neighbors and make sure your pets have proper shelter.”
Emergency Services personnel remind residents of the following cold weather precautions:
· Prepare for possible power outages.
· Stock up on food, water and other necessary items to avoid having to travel.
· Be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. Never operate a generator indoors.
· Insulate exposed water pipes and run water to help prevent pipes from freezing.
· If going outdoors, dress in layers of lightweight clothing. Wear gloves and a hat to help retain body heat.
· Turn off space heaters when leaving a room or before going to sleep.
