In recognizing the first full week of May as National Correctional Officers Week, Richland County Council issued a resolution Tuesday honoring correctional officers at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC).
A nationally accredited detention center, ASGDC serves as an incarceration facility for sentenced adult and juvenile offenders, as well as an intake center for detainees and inmates who have not been sentenced. The center’s highest priority is to protect the public, staff and detainees/inmates in their person and property.
“Officers at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center work day in and day out to ensure the safety of the public and those within the care of the facility,” said Overture Walker, County Council chair. “Council extends our sincerest gratitude to the correctional officers who work tirelessly to provide the high level of care at the detention center.”
Councilwoman Cheryl English, who chairs the County’s Detention Center Ad Hoc Committee, noted that the job of a correctional officer can be dangerous and sometimes involves putting the safety of others ahead of one’s own.
“We are thankful to the individuals who take on this duty to keep our community safer,” English said.
Recently, Richland County has taken steps to increase officer retention and attract new officers to ASGDC, including:
- raising detention officer salaries to a minimum of $40,000
- adopting a new pay scale
- implementing a pay plan that includes a bonus for new hires, a retention bonus for current officers, a referral bonus, and temporary additional pay for some officers
- approving all facility improvement requests

Celebrated annually since 1984, National Correctional Officers Week honors and pays tribute to correctional officers who provide safe, secure incarceration of juvenile and adult offenders in jails, prisons and community corrections facilities nationwide.
