(Richland PIO) – Because of the threat of inclement weather Tuesday, Jan. 9, Richland County Government is encouraging residents to plan ahead and exercise caution.
Rainfall and winds are forecasted to increase around noon Tuesday, with sustained winds of 25-35 mph and potential gusts of up to 45 mph. Afternoon thunderstorms could produce higher gusts of up to 60 mph. High winds could result in downed trees and power lines and flash flooding in low-lying areas.
While County offices are scheduled to remain open, residents are encouraged to conduct any business online as a safety precaution or handle any in-person matters by noon Tuesday. Residents also are encouraged to:
- Double-check emergency kits: Prepare an emergency kit with non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, and important documents. Make sure your kit can sustain your household for at least three days, but preferably with enough supplies to last a week or more.
- Clear gutters and drains: Make sure to clear your gutters and storm drains of debris to prevent water accumulation and reduce the risk of flooding around your home.
- Secure outdoor items: Store or secure outdoor furniture, garden tools, and toys. High winds can turn these objects into dangerous projectiles.
- Stay informed: Monitor local weather forecasts and stay informed about the developments of the storm. Have several ways to get emergency information.
- Turn around: Motorists who must be on the road and encounter a flooded roadway should not try to drive through it. Turn around and find an alternate route.
Additionally, Richland County trash collection is expected to remain on schedule but could be affected, depending on the severity of the weather. Normal operations also are expected at Jim Hamilton-L.B. Owens Airport.
