Richland County plans to delay its property tax collection deadline by one month in light of the recent floods.
The county will likely offer a 30-day extension for the property tax payment deadline from January to February, county treasurer David Adams said. County Council gave its support of the plan this week, Adams said. The county is sending a letter to the state Department of Revenue for approval.
Tax bills that would normally go out this month will likely go out in early November, Adams said.
In light of the flooding that ravaged many homes and businesses in the county, the county sees the tax bill extension as a small way it can ease a burden on families who have suffered losses, Adams said.
“There are folks who may have planned to pay for their taxes, and now they’re out of pocket for a large expense due to an act of God,” Adams said. “This isn’t something that really makes up for these folks that have lost so much, but hopefully it helps.”
